Workplace Injuries Are Not Always Immediately Apparent, Explains Double A Safety Services

Double A Safety ServicesWorkplace injuries are not always immediately apparent, especially in cases of exposure to dangerous materials or chemicals. Following Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and MSDS Personal Protective Equipment Requirements on the material safety data sheets, is the best way to ensure your long term health, reminds Alana Gow of Double A Safety Services on Vancouver Island.

She points to an article from the Canadian Cancer Society about the risks of exposure to asbestos:

"Exposure to asbestos is the main cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos fibres are very fine and if you breathe them in, they can make their way deep into the smallest airways of your lungs. Once lodged deep in the lungs, the fibres do not escape when you breathe out and can’t be coughed out. The fibres sometimes make their way through the lung and settle in the pleura. This can cause pleural mesothelioma or other lung diseases, such as asbestosis. The fine asbestos fibres can also be swallowed and settle in the digestive system. From there, they can move into the peritoneum, causing peritoneal mesothelioma.

You can be exposed to asbestos either directly, by working with asbestos, or living or working where asbestos was released from building materials or other asbestos products or indirectly, living with an asbestos worker and being exposed to the asbestos dust that is brought home on clothing and hair.

Mesothelioma may not appear until 15 to 40 years after exposure to asbestos. Some people develop mesothelioma without knowing they’ve been exposed to asbestos."

Following proper workplace safety procedures can help keep you safe today and in the future. Employers or employees looking for help in reviewing or developing safety plans for their workplace can contact Double A Safety Services on Vancouver Island. Stay Safe While Holiday Decorating and Entertaining - Safety Tips from Double A Safety

holiday safety tipsThis month, Double A Safety Services brings us some thoughts on keeping yourself and your loved ones safe over the holiday season.

Halloween has come and gone, and the holiday season is fast approaching and Remembrance Day will be next week. With this in mind The Royal Canadian Legion has respectfully requested that people refrain from starting their Christmas Decorating until after Nov. 11, in respect of our veterans past and present.  This request not only spurred us to respect it, but also to look into some holiday safety tips around the home and well enjoying the festivity events throughout the season.

If you are decorating your rooftop, ensure you:

  • Stay away from Power lines.
  • Don’t trust your “elves” to hold the ladder for you. Little ones are easily distracted. Always use the buddy system with another adult when putting up your decorations. Falling from roofs/ladders has ruined many a holiday season. Does inflatable Santa or those lights really need to go up there? Have a plan on how you're going to get up and more importantly stay up there (The ladder has solid footing, is at a 4:1 ratio and secured once in place, is there a form of fall prevention needed? etc) while you're installing your lights and decorations.
  • Ensure you have the right power cords for your connections (are they weather proof? Can they hold the load?). You don’t want to short or overload your electrical system
  • Outdoor lights are for outdoors, inside lights are for inside. Inside Christmas lights are not meant to last through the snow and rain.
  • Watch out for Chip and Dale and other critters who may have taken up residence in your attic/roof system. You don’t want to fall 20 feet because they scared the daylights out of you.
  • Secure the decorations you are putting on display, this will protect your family and neighbors as well as your property from damage that may be caused from a sudden gust of wind sending your Santa, Santa’s helpers, reindeer and sleigh flying.

Will you be hosting a gathering this year? If so here are some good tips on holiday hosting:

  • Know your guests – it is much easier to track the changes in behaviour of those you know. Inviting strangers increases the risk.
  • Serve lots of food that has protein and fat – salt encourages more drinking, and sugar does not mix well with alcohol.
  • Have plenty of non-alcoholic choices along with the spirited beverages. Serve a festive fruit punch or "mocktail" clearly labeled alcohol-free, along with other non-alcoholic juices, sodas and water.
  • Greet all guests on arrival and departure, taking the opportunity to assess their condition.
  • If a guest appears to be impaired, encourage him or her to give you their car keys. Buddy up with a friend to persuade the intoxicated person to take a cab, or stay the night.
  • Keep the phone numbers of cab companies handy and cash on hand for cab fares (in Campbell River: 250.287.8294 / 287.TAXI and  250-287 8383 for Bee Line Taxi. On Quadra Island: 250 205 0505. In the Comox Valley: 250-339-7955)  Tell the guest that a cab has been ordered. Don’t give the option to refuse.
  • Only time will sober the person, not more fluids or food. Offering a spare bed is a good recourse.
  • If the person refuses to hand over the car keys or spend the night at your house, call the police. It may seem drastic, but it is far better than tragic consequences. As a social host, you should be concerned about your guests consuming too much alcohol, and then getting behind the wheel. The law may even find you liable for any damage your guests cause on the way home.

The holidays are to be enjoyed by all, let’s all do our best to have a happy holiday season.

Double A Safety Services Offers Tips for Staying Warm and Dry at Your Work Site This Winter

Double A Safety Services Job site safety Vancouver islandDouble A Safety Services on Vancouver Island offers up tips and reminders to keep workers safe this winter.

“Old man winter is approaching and although we have milder winters then the rest of Canada we still need to prepare for the cooler temps and of course the rain,” explains Double A Safety Services' principle Alana Gow. Work site dressing for Vancouver Island winter weather includes:

  • Rain Gear. Good quality rain gear and boots. There are many good quality, CSA approved work rain boots, keeping your feet dry and warm, is just as important as the rest of your body.

  • Dress in layers. Use many thin, warm layers rather than a few thick layers. It will insulate better and allow you to strip off layers if the temperature climbs. Have somewhere to store the layers to keep them dry.

  • Dress for the appropriate activity level. Dressing for an active day of logging will be different than dressing for a day of fishing or construction.

- Buy or find a pair of insulated boots. Ideally, the lining should be wool or synthetic--not cotton. Linings can be purchased separately. Mark’s, Ono’s and other work supply stores carrying a variety of CSA Approved insulated work boots and linings.

- Wear winter socks. Warm winter socks are important in keeping warm dry feet. Wool is best, although good synthetic "fleece" socks are often quite good. You can layer socks, but be careful that your feet are comfortable and the circulation isn't shut down. Carrying extra pairs is a good idea as well, to change into a fresh, dry pair if required.

- Use a good quality coat, parka, or jacket. Generally speaking, the thicker the better, whether it is a synthetic ski jacket, a wool pea coat, or a down jacket.

- Wear a base layer. A "base layer" is long johns, union suit, long underwear, or whatever can provide a warm, light base to your winter gear. Merino wool products are recognized as one of the best base layers available.

- Wear a hat. Remember - heat rises, and you don't want to lose it.

- Wear gloves or mittens. Fingers and hands are very vulnerable to the cold, so keep them covered. Very thin gloves (like "magic gloves") are better than nothing, but comfortable, warm gloves are important.

- Hand warmers can be useful, especially if you don't have shelter handy. They can be purchased at any outdoor or hunting store. Never use these as a substitute for dressing warmly, however.

- Wear more than one layer on your legs. Oddly, some people will wear five layers on their torso, and only one layer on the legs. At minimum, have a base layer like long underwear and an outer layer, like snowboarding pants.

- Keep dry. Being wet will cause chill to set in more quickly than if you're dry. Have waterproof or at least water resistant outer layers.

- Carry a whistle. Attach a whistle to your jacket or work vest with easy access, in the event of slipping and falling in dense foliage, or if trapped on the other side of an avalanche or landslide. Blowing a whistle will use less energy than yelling or screaming, and can assist rescuers in finding you.

Double A Safety Services Provides an Overview of Personal Protective Equipment Regulations

Double AA Safety Services campbell riverDouble A Safety Services helps Vancouver Island companies maintain and energize the integrity of their safety program. Double A Safety brings experience in workplace safety from large and small construction projects to help companies from 10 employees to 200 employees with safety training, evaluation,  development, safety documentation and due diligence procedures. This month, Double AA Safety shares the importance Personal Protective Equipment aka PPE.
“When we first get on the job, we are pretty much aware of what PPE we will be required to bring with us when we first arrive,” says Double AA Safety owner Alana Gow. “It is often a misconception that the company is required to supply their workers with their necessary PPE.”
In fact, Part 8 of the BC Regulations states that “a worker is responsible for providing: clothing needed for protection against the natural elements; general purpose work gloves and appropriate footwear including safety footwear, and safety headgear.”
And “an employer is responsible for providing, at no cost to the worker, all other items of personal protective equipment required by this regulation. If the personal protective equipment provided by the employer causes allergenic or other adverse health effects, the employer must provide appropriate alternate equipment or safe measures.
Nothing in this section precludes or alters an existing or future agreement between a worker or workers and an employer to the effect that the employer will be responsible for the provision either at no cost or some cost to the worker, of any or all of the items described in subsection”
Note: Part 8 provides requirements for most types of protective clothing and equipment. See Part 7 on Noise for hearing protection requirements.
"Most companies do in fact supply hard hats, gloves, and hi-visibility clothing for their workers,” Gow said. “This is good due diligence on their part. They are required to supply any specialized Personal Protective Equipment required for your task at hand. For example, respiratory protective equipment or fall prevention equipment. They are also required to ensure you are fully trained not only in the use and maintenance of the equipment, but also if and when you are required to use it.”
For more information on developing or reviewing your companies safety plan, contact Double AA Safety Services in Campbell River at 250.914.4699.
